Games and Learning
Games can easily position students to play with and explore mathematical concepts, and for that reason, they have been a longstanding focus of both my design work and my research: Rescue At Boone’s Meadow - The Adventures of Jasper Woodbury.
Mathematics Across Contexts
Schools are contexts that often look quite different from other contexts, especially school math. My research considers how the practices of contexts shape what it means to do math, and how a shift in context can transform thinking.
Problem Solving as Play
Play and exploration is a fundamental way that people make sense of the world, and yet it is a practice that gets increasingly limited as we get older. My research explores what mathematical play looks like, and how such play supports learning and engagement.
